Meet & Greet at Julie & Mark’s Home

#karenguzak4mayor

It was a small group but you wouldn’t know it by the many topics covered at the Meet & Greet with Karen at Julie Garner and Mark Miller’s home, Tuesday, September 26th.

Water and sewer; new garbage collection rates; what’s up with the old mill site; affordable housing; the opioid crisis; and even Community Transit Bus #109 which will not stop at the Park and Ride Lot north of town to avoid using the roundabout! This latter issue was a new one for Karen but she was on top of the others.

Karen’s detailed grasp of the city’s workings from her nine years of elected experience sparked a discussion of her opponent, John Kartak’s lack of elected or even volunteer experience in city affairs plus his failure to finish high school. Co-host Reverand Mark, the former Pastor of St John’s, is concerned that if elected, a Kartak administration might upset the balance of community service thanks to the generosity of many groups in town.

Our group wished there could be a debate where voters could compare first hand the wide gap of knowledge of the city’s 28 million dollar operation between the two candidates for strong mayor.

Perhaps this will happen at the League of Woman Voter’s Candidates Forum on Saturday, October 7 at the Snohomish High School PAC, 3-5p.

At Jen, Jason & Baby Oona’s Home

Jen and Jason with baby Oona live only a few blocks from us up Avenue C in a historic home built around the 1900s, quite possibly earlier. Jen practices yoga with Karen who feels privileged to have watched Jen’s body change as baby Oona grew. Oona is an Anglicisation of the Irish-language name Úna. It’s a name made famous by Eugene O’Neill’s daughter, who became Charlie Chaplin’s wife. (Got to love the internets.)

On Gail’s Deck

Many thanks to Gail Jackson Brown for hosting Karen’s first Meet & Greet gathering in homes, but in this case, it was on Gail’s wonderful deck overlooking the soccer fields. We came away with two short clips in spite of the gathering darkness.

Your comments are encouraged below and the calendar on the right lists upcoming Meet & Greets along with other events that include Karen.

Finding the Middle Way

September 13, the Snohomish Networking Women met at Karen’s studio AngelArmsWorks in the renovated St. Michael Church at 3rd and Avenue B for their monthly meeting. As is the custom, the host is given the stage to talk about their work and Karen talk about the city’s successes over the nine years she as served on council and her current run for mayor. The following sequence of images is of Karen explaining the struggle to find the middle way as a leader.

Changing of the Guard

And Karen’s in the middle.

Snohomish bid farewell to now Captain Flood and welcomed Lt. Keith Rogers as our new Chief of Police effective today. John Flood was promoted to Captain and reassigned to oversee the sheriff’s office north and south precincts.

Karen and Captain Flood bonded when as mayor Karen promoted contracting our police services with the county and Flood was the first Chief of Police. That was an emotional time in January 2012, losing our independent police force, but it has proven a sound decision with both better service while saving $800,000 a year.
