Our seventh summer of studio concerts came to a grand conclusion this past Sunday — celebrated with this group photograph.
The Saint Helens String Quartet performed a rich program featuring two pieces with the composers in attendance. Over the years, the Quartet has premiered five pieces at our Second Sundays in Snohomish concert series.
Along with the music, Karen and Warner prepared a tasty, richly textured, summer supper with Salade Nicoise as the main course. Our capacity audience enjoyed the meal to the last morsel, and savored wine, food, music and the good vibes of our growing community of Second Sundays.
And speaking of which, community members are invited to contribute mini reviews of the concert in the comment section below, while we process the video footage for streaming on this page as soon as possible.
Thanks to all who helped with preparations and clean-up; plus, to all for supporting these wonderful musicians.

Last summer the ever adventurous Saint Helens String Quartet performed Sean Osborn’s “Quintet for Strings and Clarinet: The Beatles” featuring the composer on clarinet. The performance reset the bar of expectations once again for this young group, who played their first concert here in 2006!
We hope the short clip above from last year’s concert will encourage you to join us this Sunday, August 8th for the final concert in our Seventh Summer of Second Sundays in Snohomish.
And while strolling down memory lane, we would like to note that Saint Helens performed “Swing Lo” — a piece commissioned from Ken Benshoof, which they recorded with help of a grant from the Jack Straw Foundation; and, that recording is used in a short documentary by Warner about the family wheat farms of eastern Washington. It can be viewed online HERE.

From the Johnson, Miller & Dermody website:
These are our Blues, we sing ‘em as we please.
We have been playing this Blues music with each other for close to ten years. Individually, we have been doing it much longer–decades. Like many players, we’ve attempted to hear and absorb as much as we could from the masters who preceded us. When you work in a style in which so many definitive statements have been made, though, the question arises, “What do you have to add to what’s already been said?”. The music on Deceiving Blues is our answer to that question.
Samples of their music can be heard HERE.

Members of the Snohomish High School Band who came together to present our first Sunday concert are from left to right: Joe Chlebowski, Justin Thiele, Elizabeth Janzen, Curtis Weed, Audrey Stangland, Cecily Janzen, and Leah Thomas.
We were treated to the live music first heard in medieval churches. “Works full of dark cords but always ending on a up note,” as Justin Thiele told us. The first piece we recognized was the “Triumphal March from Aida” — though we had be told which opera!
Exciting news was shared during introductions, both Justin and Elizabeth have been accepted into University of Washington’s School of Music to continue their study of the French horn — taking up half of the four slots available for new students majoring in the fanciful instrument!
As Snohomish becomes known as the French horn capital of the Pacific Northwest, remember that you read it here first.
And who would have thought how good pizza goes with early music!

The French Horn will be featured in the first concert of the summer.
That’s the instrument Elizabeth Janzen plays and we received an email from her with the list of pieces that her impromptu winds group will be playing selections from — Three Elizabethan Madrigals; Antiphonal; Hallelujah, Amen; Wherever you Walk; We Hasten with Eager Footsteps; Fantasia and Fugue; Gloria from Lord Nelson Mass; Grand March from Aida; Overture to HMS Pinafore; and more!
Donations will go to support the Panther Band of Snohomish High School.
And in August, the Saint Helens String Quartet will be featuring a premiere piece commissioned from Alex Bishop, a Snohomish native attending Cornish School of Arts.
Summer is so Now in Snohomish!

Elizabeth Janzen, graduating senior from Snohomish High School, and who plans on majoring in music performance at University of Washington this fall, is putting together an impromptu concert with her classmates, including her twin sister Cecily. They promise classical pieces composed for the winds, and a little Dixieland. Elizabeth plays the French horn and Cecily the clarinet and saxophone.
